AGA has been representing Dr John Coustas, head of NYSE listed Danaos Corporation (DAC) since 2012 in, among others, a dispute by ex-spouse claiming an amount exceeding €234 million representing 1/3 of the value of assets allegedly acquired during their marriage. Following a well-structured Court decision which adopted AGA’s client arguments and awarded €684,000 plus interest to claimant (and that not as claimant’s share in the marital assets but as compensation for interior design and social event planning services provided to a company if the Danaos group), the case was finally settled between the parties. The decision received widespread publicity as it upturned the perception that a spouse is entitled to at least 1/3 of the property acquired by the other spouse during the marriage simply because they were a spouse.
